Hostel review: Hogwartz Backpacker Hostel, Dunedin

We decided to choose Hogwartz for a night when we found it in the BBH hostel network leaflet, and we had a pleasant stay.

The location is great, a bit up on the hill, providing guests with fantastic views. It’s just a 5-min walk to the Octagon, the town centre. Parking was a bit of a problem, in a very narrow and steep side road.

Staff at Hogwartz were very courteous and friendly, showed us to our room and actually asked if we had had a nice stay.

The hostel is really cosy, with quirky dining and common rooms. The kitchen is big enough and very well equipped. It did seem a little like a boarding school set-up, due to the corridors leading to the dorm rooms, but that did not impact the atmosphere negatively.

We stayed in a 5-bed dorm room, which was huge, had multiple windows and high ceilings, and provided single beds with decent mattresses (no bunks), a sink, wardrobes and extra blankets. Bathrooms were newly renovated, stylish and very clean.

I’d recommend Hogwartz for someone looking for budget accommodation in Dunedin. There are no bus crowds, the it’s all very friendly and homey and facilities are great.
