Nomen est omen for this lovely, almost boutique hostel. It is one of my favourite hostels in New Zealand. The beautiful property is a rather small hostel, located in a residential neighbourhood close to Queens Park but not far away from the center. The Victorian villa is surrounded by a well-kept garden and features a veranda with nice furniture.

It is one of those places that provides a home away from home feeling, as it is not set-up like the usual hostel, providing travelers with anonymous, functional, basic and sterile mass budget accommodation. Instead, it features wonderfully inviting rooms with high ceilings, a great living room with a fire place and lots and lots of books and magazines, and a modern, well equipped kitchen. The atmosphere is very pleasant, it’s cosy and everything has this very unique and homey feel to it.

I stayed in a double bedroom which was very nicely decorated, had good furniture, and we slept very well. The bathrooms looked brand new and were very clean.

Southern Comfort is a great place to stay when in Invercargill.

This review reflects my subjective opinion only.
