New Regent Street, Christchurch

New Regent Street, Christchurch

Regent Street is perhaps one of the most well-known streets in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is right in the centre of town and popular with tourists and locals alike. It dates back to the 1930s and was actually New Zealand’s first mall, as it was built as one big commercial unit.

When in Christchurch, one should definitely pay a visit to New Zealand’s most beautiful street, as it was named in the 1930s. The heritage tram loop runs through New Regent Street, along the pastel-coloured Spanish Mission-style buildings, and the pedestrian-only street offers an extraordinary collection of small shops and, of course, coffe places.

New Regent Street was affected by the Christchurch earthquake. However, according to some of the media coverage, it got away better off than a lot of the other famous Christchurch landmarks. There are plans to restore New Regent Street to its former beauty, so if you’re heading to Christchurch, make sure you check out where the redevelopment of New Regent Street is at!

It seems to me I could spend a lot of time photographing the pastel-coloured buildings! I hope to see Christchurch and New Regent Street for myself next year!

For sure you’ll be on the South Island, and then inevitably you’ll see Christchurch as well. It has its own gravitational pull. It is a great city, pre and post earthquake.

Hi Christina! There have been a lot of changes around Christchurch since February 2011! The biggest came about with earthquake that devasted much of our CBD. New Regent Street was hit badly, is still cordoned off and is looking a lot sadder than it did when you visited. Thank you for encouraging people to visit Christchurch! There’s still so much to see and do. And you can still visit this street and see the pastel buildings, but they’re behind a chain link fence and are abandoned and dusty.

Hi YHA and thanks for your comment. I had no idea New Regent Street was hit so badly. Thanks for letting us know, I’ll have to change my post. It’s sad to hear that. I do hope they are not beyond repair and that they will be restored to their full glory! And I’m looking forward to seeing them and all the other great stuff when I’m over soon!
