Lindis Pass, South Island, New Zealand

Lindis Pass is located in northern Otago on New Zealand’s South Island, between Cromwell to the south and Omarama to the north. State Highway 8 takes you via Lindis Pass, linking the Mackenzie Basin with Central Otago. It is, like a few other special places in New Zealand, an incredibly scenic drive; no signs of civilisation, but mountains and tussock grasslands as far as the eye can see. And a few shrubs, here and there.

The Lindis Pass route is a great one to drive and one you’ll take on your way from Lake Tekapo or Omarama to Wanaka. Allow for a little extra time as you’ll be stopping a lot along the way to take pictures and take in the amazing views.

But be very careful here in winter time. I’ve often been caught out here in the snow – often a problem! It is more beautiful though than beautiful.

Thanks for the tip, John! I’ve never been there in the winter time but I can imagine it’s a fabulous sight.

Beautiful. It looks like there would be great hiking there too.

Absolutely. There’s quite a bit of mountain-biking, short hikes and longer tramping that you can do in the Lindis Conservation Area.

Beautiful photo! I’ve never been to New Zealand, but it’s on our list for the next year or so… we’ll definitely have to keep the Lindis Pass in mind.

Christy, I hope you get to go to NZ next year. If you drive from Lake Tekapo to Queenstown or Wanaka, you’ll be going via the Lindis Pass. So it’s practically on your way if you see those two popular destinations.
