Recently Michael and I went for a bit of a romantic mid-week getaway to the gorgeous Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch. Its a beautiful place with loads to do, great wine and delicious food, so we knew we were definitely going to enjoy our stay there!
There are so many reasons to go stay or visit Spier ( especially with the amazing offers they have on at the moment! ), so I thought I would let you know what my personal top 5 are!
The stunning location:
I am not going to lie; I fell head over heels in love with Spier and especially the gardens. It is situated in Stellenbosch which is one of my favorite places near Cape Town to unwind and get away from the city stress! The property is really big with plenty of beautiful things to see if you take the time to explore. You can stroll along a river while looking at the Helderberg mountains in the distance or simply relax on the green grass next to the willow trees. My favorite thing was the little bridges across the river that seemed straight out of some kind of fairytale, especially with the beautiful Autumn colors.
Its no secret that I love good food and I am happy to report the food at Spier was just as amazing as I had hoped it would be. The portions were huge and oh so good, and I had a chicken pie at one of their lunch restaurants, Eight that has basically spoiled all chicken pies for me forever because it was that good! I also loved the whole concept of Eight. It is a farm to kitchen restaurant that supports local, and the quality of the ingredients really shines through in all the dishes.
I was really excited and surprised when I saw how much Spier had to offer in terms of things to do other than eat and drink, although I really did enjoy that part! We did a segway tour of the property which was much more than I expected and so much fun! I was a bit nervous at first as the last time I went on one I fell, but our guide was so cool and made us feel really comfortable and safe. He prepped us before we got started and always made sure we were going at a pace that made us feel safe ( us meaning me as Michael was so much better than me at it! ). I had in mind we were just going around the property on the walkways, but the tour is actually on a dirt trail through the vineyards and other bits of the farm. We stopped at a few spots, and our guide told us about all the amazing green projects Spier has going on like their wastewater treatment plant. They are all about sustainability which just makes the whole place so much more special to me!
You cant go to an amazing wine farm like Spier and not have wine, so we had to try a lot of what they had to offer. Their Creative block range is one of my favorites and its not only great wine but it also has a really awesome story. The wine is linked to an art project with the same name, and the different wines are made up from 2, 3 or 5 different types of grapes from specific vineyard blocks. The pinotage definitely has a special place in my heart now, and you really need to buy a case to take home if you visit!
When I think of a wine farm picnic, I think of Spier. It’s the first wine farm I ever visited, and the lovely memories of eating and drinking on their lawns in the midday sun still linger in my mind. Their winter picnic will make you hungry on the spot and at only R500 for two people including a bottle of wine its a steal! If you want to spoil someone you love I suggest you book your basket now, just don’t forget a comfy blanket!
